Mixtape: Lady Jams

As a single girl and Parks and Recreation fan, I'm an avid supporter of Galentine's Day. Whether or not you believe in the holiday, you got to admit that womxn supporting womxn is something to be celebrated EVERY day of the year (feminism, but make it intersectional!).

To celebrate today, here are (in no particular order ) 15 of my personal favorite songs by women:

1. "Fallingwater" by Maggie Rogers

THIS. SONG. My girl here Maggie is one of the few modern artists whose music I regularly listen to. Her first album came out last month, and I can not stop listening. This song is my absolute favorite, and her live performance on Saturday Night Live gives me chills.

2. "Like a Prayer" by Madonna

Madonna is my sun, my moon, my stars. She is my everything. I could list all of her songs on here (but I won't, at least not today). This particular one is my go-to when I'm in the mood for Madonna. Which is honestly everyday.

3. "Everywhere" by Fleetwood Mac

Written and sung by band member Christine McVie, "Everywhere" is - in my opinion - one of the most beautiful songs ever created in the history of the world and beyond. I've never been in love, but I hope it will feel as transcendant as this song sounds.

4. "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes

I know, I know. A lot of '80s hits. I'm not apologizing for that. This is who I am. I have vivid memories of this song playing on the radio while driving around town with my mom, and for that reason alone this song has a special place in my heart.

5. "Dreams" by The Cranberries

When lead singer Dolores O'Riordan passed away last year, I was beyond devastated. Her voice remains one of the most unique in the music industry, and I had always dreamed of hearing her perform this song live.

6. "Nothing's Wrong" by HAIM

When this song dropped in 2017, I could not stop listening. The trio of sisters are the epitome of cool to me, and they are so incredibly talented. Check out their video Valentine, a live performance of three of their songs (including this one).

7. "Nasty" by Janet Jackson

Before "No Scrubs," there was "Nasty." This is the ultimate men-ain't-shit anthem, and Janet is my favorite of all the Jacksons (sorry Michael). Janet is a QUEEN, and the NFL really needs to allow her back to the Super Bowl.

8. "Stand Back" by Stevie Nicks

I would give anything for the opportunity to meet Stevie Nicks and hear her sing in person. Her special guest appearance on American Horror Story: Coven was the highlight of television history.

9. "That Don't Impress Me Much" by Shania Twain

I love this song so much, as a kid I used to wake up early on Saturday mornings to watch the video on our family computer. And this outfit? Shania snapped with this one.

10. "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" by ABBA

I really pushed myself to only choose one song from each artist, so sorry "Dancing Queen." This is hands down ABBA's best. I said it.

11. "No Scrubs" by TLC

What's a Galentine's playlist without this song?

12. "Straight On" by Heart

Heart is another band who has so many incredible songs, I struggled with choosing just one. I'm confident in this choice though. It's groovy, it's sexy, it's Heart at their best.

13. "9 To 5" by Dolly Parton

A song about women's experience in the work place? Dolly nailed it with this one. Please see the movie (by the same name) if you haven't already. You won't regret it.

14. "See You Again" by Miley Cyrus

I've loved Miley since she entered my life in 2006. This song is a classic, and here she performs it with that special Miley twang I love so much. Her cover of Godmother Dolly's "Jolene" is perfection.

15. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" by Whitney Houston

The one. The only. Whitney. I saved the best for last, and I know I did not disappoint. I miss her every day. Whitney, darling, we love you.
